Atlas 2.0.0 RC 4, built from commit 3f57a65b0edcf9460107c55bbfade20e9955f263 on the dev branch (3f57a65: Release: 2.0.0 RC 4). Every push to dev replaces these files until the next pre-release.
What changed since RC 3
Fixed
- Wavetable editor Frame slider. The Frame slider kept the frame count the wavetable had when the editor was shown: on the default table it stopped at 7, however many frames the keyboard editor added or deleted, and it did not follow the frame the arrow keys, Home and End moved to. It now always goes from 1 to the table's frame count and shows the frame you are on, also after undo and redo, and the Frame timeline position slider shows that frame's position.
This is a release candidate: Atlas 2.0.0 as it is meant to ship, unless testing finds something that has to change first. Keep copies of the presets you care about, and tell us what works and what does not.
Atlas can get loud. Some oscillators, filters and effects reach well above 0 dBFS, so a limiter after Atlas, on the track or on the master, is recommended when you play it, especially on headphones.
Contributions are welcome: bug reports, feature requests, pull requests, presets, wavetables and documentation, at https://github.com/BlindProducers/atlas. Atlas is built to be played and programmed with a keyboard and a screen reader, so reports from VoiceOver and Windows screen reader users are especially valuable.
macOS: the .pkg installs the VST3 and the Audio Unit in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins. It is not signed, so the first time macOS blocks it: open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. The macOS zips hold the bare plug-ins for copying by hand. They are not notarized either, so after unzipping, clear the quarantine flag (xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Atlas.vst3, and the same for Atlas.component) or hosts refuse to load them.
Windows: the .exe installs Atlas.vst3 into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 (or a folder you choose) and can be removed from Apps & features. It is not signed, so SmartScreen may ask once: choose More info, then Run anyway. The Windows zip holds the bare Atlas.vst3 folder for copying by hand into your VST3 folder. Rescan plug-ins in your host afterwards.

Atlas 2.0.0 RC 3, built from commit e8b944a237735c96ea85a1f553f55647fa2a1a81 on the dev branch (e8b944a: Release: 2.0.0 RC 3). Every push to dev replaces these files until the next pre-release.
What changed since RC 2
New
- Frozen phase randomization. Each oscillator has a Phase Randomization Mode after Phase Randomization. New Each Note, the default, draws new random phases for every note as before, so older presets load and sound unchanged. Frozen starts every note's unison oscillators from the same random phases, like a rendered unison sample played back from a sampler: repeated notes and the notes of a chord all start alike, and since detune is in cents the beating scales with pitch as a resampled recording's would. Phase Randomization still sets how far the phases spread. Phase Randomization Seed (0 to 65535), shown only while Frozen, picks the pattern, and a Randomize phase seed button after it picks a new one, as the Random Amplitudes seed does. A seed sounds the same on every platform and in every render. Wavetable and Analog oscillators both use it, and every existing host parameter ID stays put.
- Unison Remove Fundamental. Wavetable oscillators have an Off/On switch after Unison Blend. On, it takes the first harmonic out of every detuned unison voice, so wide unison and Reese basses keep a steady low end while the upper harmonics still beat. Only a voice on the note's pitch keeps its fundamental: the middle voice of an odd count. With an even count every voice is detuned and none keeps it, and a single voice is left whole. Warps apply afterwards, so Sync, Bend or FM can bring some low end back. Off, the default, leaves older presets as they were; Analog oscillators have no wave buffers and hide the switch.
Fixed
- Unison random phase on Apple Silicon. Phase Randomization spread the unison phases over the whole cycle on Windows but not on Apple Silicon, where half the unison oscillators started every note exactly in phase and the rest only in the first half of the cycle, so even 100% left the stack strongly coherent and unison sounded less smooth than on Windows. Mac now matches Windows.

What changed since RC 1
New
- Destroy effect. A new effect in the Distortion and character category: a native port of Alessio Scala's Serum 2 Overdrive JSFX, which recreates the Overdrive mode of Serum 2's Distortion with its filter section and its Stack feature. The DSP is the script's own, checked sample for sample against it, and every control keeps the script's range and units. Its controls: Drive, Stack (1 to 16 stages of high-pass, gain control and soft-knee clipper), Filter (Off, Pre or Post, a state-variable filter before or after the stages), Filter Frequency (read in Hz), Filter Q, Filter LP-HP, Level (read in dB) and Mix. The filter's three rows show only while Filter is Pre or Post. Destroy adds 7 samples of latency; the host is told, and the dry signal is delayed to match.
- Frequency Shifter Mode 2. The Frequency Shifter has a Mode menu. Mode 1 is the shifter as it was, so older patches load unchanged. Mode 2 is a native port of Alessio Scala's Serum 2 Bode JSFX, which recreates Serum 2's Bode frequency-shifter module with its feedback delay, checked sample for sample against the script. Its rows, labelled Mode 2, are Shift, Range (in Hz), Direction, Width, Mono Input, Delay (in milliseconds), Feedback, Blur and Mix, in the script's units. Mode 2 adds 11 samples of latency, told to the host and matched on the dry signal.
- Sort presets. A Sort presets list after the preset search chooses the order of the preset table: Name A to Z or Z to A, Newest or Oldest first, Author A to Z and Category A to Z (Style or Genre on the community's side, as the column is named there). Community presets and Community banks also offer Most downloaded; away from them the sort goes back to the name. The sort is remembered per instance like the filters, presets that tie are listed by name, and a column header pressed with the mouse still sorts, which the list then names even when it is not one of its choices. The keyboard help lists it.
Changed
- S and Shift S no longer sort the preset table. Sort presets takes their place, and the help, the table's description and the keyboard help say so.
- The Scream effect is gone; Scream stays as a filter model. The effect had been hidden from every effect menu since Scream became a filter model in the filter section and in Filter FX. A saved slot that still names it passes audio through, and every other effect keeps its number, so presets load as before.
Fixed
- No DC from Saturator or Destroy. Saturator's curves, and Destroy's last clipper, are symmetric, so lopsided material such as a driven pulse wave left an offset on the wet signal. Both now run a 5 Hz DC blocker on the wet signal before the mix; the distortion itself is unchanged.

What changed since beta 2
New
- Particles effect. A granular texture processor, in the Space category, built on Mutable Instruments' granular processor (MIT). It records what comes in into a buffer and plays it back as overlapping grains. Its controls:
- Mode. Granular sows grains from the buffer; Pitch shifter and time stretcher plays it back continuously, splicing where the waveform matches; Looping delay replays it as a delay that loops and pitch shifts; Spectral freezes and reshapes its spectrum.
- Quality sets how much sound the buffer holds: about 1 second in 16-bit stereo, 2 in 16-bit mono, 4 in 8-bit stereo and 7 in 8-bit mono, the 8-bit settings sounding grainier.
- Input Gain (−18 to +6 dB), Position, Size, Pitch (±48 semitones), Density (negative sows grains at a steady rate, positive at random, 0 none), Texture, Mix, Stereo Spread, Feedback, Reverb, Freeze and Trigger. What Position, Size, Density and Texture do changes with the mode, and each one's description says how.
- Every note played fires a grain, and so does Trigger, an Off/On slider, each time it turns on (modulation turns it on above 50%), so with Density at 0 grains play only when triggered.
- Every slider, and Freeze, can be modulated from its context menu.
- Saturator, Dynamic Tube and Overdrive effects, in the Distortion and character category, and Multiband Dynamics, in Dynamics: native ports of Alessio Scala's JSFX, which recreate the Live devices of those names from measurements. The DSP is the scripts' own, checked sample for sample against them, and every control keeps its script's range and units.
- Saturator. Eight curves (Analog Clip, Soft Sine, Bass Shaper, Medium Curve, Hard Curve, Sinoid Fold, Digital Clip and Waveshaper), Drive, Color filters before and after the curve, Post Clip, Output, Pre-DC Filter, Hi-Quality 2x oversampling and Dry/Wet. Bass Shaper Threshold shows with the Bass Shaper curve and the Waveshaper group with the Waveshaper.
- Dynamic Tube. Tubes A, B and C, Drive, Bias, Envelope with Attack and Release, Tone, Output, Hi-Quality and Dry/Wet.
- Overdrive. A band-pass filter (Frequency and Width) into a clipper, with Drive, Tone, Dynamics and Dry/Wet.
- Multiband Dynamics. Low, Mid and High band groups, each with Active, Solo, Input Gain, Above and Below thresholds and ratios (read as 1 : x), Attack, Release and Output Gain, below the Low Band and High Band switches and the two splits; Detection (RMS or Peak), Soft Knee, Time, Output and Amount in a Global group. Twelve factory FX presets come with it, from the script's own: Standard Multiband Comp, OTT, Multiband Gate, Split Band De-esser and more. The script's sidechain is not included.
- Hi-Quality adds 3 samples of latency to Saturator and 4 to Dynamic Tube, and Overdrive's look-ahead adds 8 at 2x oversampling; the host is told, and the dry signal is delayed to match. Every slider can be modulated from its context menu.
- A Simple view for each LFO. Every LFO opens with two tabs, Simple and Custom, read as radio buttons: Enter shows a tab's view and the arrows move to the other tab. The Simple view has Shape (Sine, Triangle, Saw Up, Saw Down, Square), Morph, Sync, the one rate row that Sync uses and Trigger Mode. Morph runs from −100% to 100% and can be modulated per voice: Sine bends towards a triangle or a square, Triangle moves its peak until it is a saw, the saws curve and Square sets its pulse width. The custom shape is kept while the Simple view plays, and saved presets open in the Custom view and sound as before. In the Custom view, Sync is now a menu and comes before Frequency.
- Free Running LFOs and random modulators. LFOs have a Free Running sync type, and random modulators a third Sync Type choice (Trigger, Sync, Free Running). A free-running source keeps one phase, or one random stream, for every voice: a new note joins it where it is instead of restarting it, and it keeps time between notes. With no note playing, a free-running source routed to an effect or another global control keeps moving, so an LFO on an effect no longer stops when the last note's release ends. The random modulator's old Off setting, which the editor called Free running, is now named Trigger.
- Your own default patch. Settings has a Default patch group. It names your default patch or says that none is chosen; Browse default patch picks a patch from your Atlas folder to be the default, and Reset default patch, shown only while you have one, goes back to Atlas's own. Each new Atlas in a host starts from your default patch, as Initialize patch does. Undo takes either change back.
- New shortcuts. The grave accent (or § on a Mac's ISO keyboard) goes to Presets, backslash to Macros, Shift A to Arpeggiators, V to Voice and performance, X to Signal routing and R to Random modulation. The keyboard help in Settings lists them.
- Download progress and Cancel download. While a community preset or bank downloads, a Download progress bar and a Cancel download button appear after the Autoload toggle, below the preset list. The bar's name carries the percentage that has arrived, said again every couple of seconds while the bar or the button has the focus, and Cancel download stops the download, removes what had arrived and puts the focus back on the preset list. Both are hidden, and out of the Tab order, while nothing downloads. While a patch or a bank uploads, the Share form's Cancel is named Cancel upload.
Changed
- Atlas's default patch. Every oscillator plays Basic Shapes, a wavetable of sine, saturated sine, triangle, saw, square and two pulse waves, and every oscillator goes to the main effects. Presets saved before keep the Filter 1 and Filter 2 routing they were made with.
- The Braids oscillator is called Macro. Its type, controls and help say Macro. Presets and host automation load as before.
- LFO shape presets. The LFO's shape preset menu, G and H in its keyboard editor and the shapes Performer inserts are now the six common waves: Sine, Triangle, Saw up, Saw down, Square and Pulse, in place of 35 shapes, several of them the same wave under another name.
- The Trance gate editor. The step shapes are Whole, Medium, Short, Ramp down and Ramp up. Left and Right choose a step, G and H change its shape, M mutes and unmutes it, Backspace resets the pattern to a new Trance gate's, and the grid and pattern length keys stay. The level, curve and Apply keys are gone; each step reads its shape, and says muted when it is.
- The community's collections in the preset browser. In Community presets and Community banks the Bank list and column are Author, the uploader, and Category is Style for presets and Genre for banks. The Library list and the Bank and Library columns, which could only say Community, are left out there; All presets and Favourites keep them. The first row of each list is named after it: All authors, All styles, All genres.
- Shorter download and upload announcements. A transfer is said with its name and size, as in Downloading CoolPiano, 1.1 GB, or Uploading bank Keys. A finished one says Downloaded, Imported bank or Uploaded and its name, and Cancel says Download cancelled or Upload cancelled.
- The Share patch form's first style is None, which uploads the patch with no style.
Fixed
- G goes to the Global group. With Glitch Delay or Multiband Dynamics loaded, G went to the effect's own Global group instead of Atlas's.
- Community presets with multi-samples are downloaded once. Return on a downloaded preset that carries its instruments downloaded it again every time. Atlas now keeps the library's checksum of each download in
Community/Downloads.jsonand downloads again only when the library has a new copy. - Community banks are imported once. Return on an imported bank unpacked its presets, wavetables, samples, LFO and FX presets and impulse responses again. It now says the bank is already imported; a new copy on the library is downloaded and imported once, and a bank whose folder you deleted is imported again from the archive Atlas kept.
This is a release candidate: Atlas 2.0.0 as it is meant to ship, unless testing finds something that has to change first. Keep copies of the presets you care about, and tell us what works and what does not.

Changelog
Atlas 2.0.0 beta 2, built from commit 950d9a802b908bdd863b43542ff747736fc78f4e on the dev branch (950d9a8: Speech: a voice Envelope 1 freed no longer sings on in Voice mode). Every push to dev replaces these files until the next beta.
What changed since beta 1
New
- Speech oscillator. A new oscillator type that sings the words you type, with the voice of eSpeak NG. Type the words into the slot's text box and press Enter: each note sings the next syllable, the notes of a chord sing one syllable together, and the words rewind when playback starts. Its controls:
- Mode. Sung sings each note's pitch and holds the vowel while the key is down. Spoken keeps eSpeak NG's own intonation and plays the words straight through, with middle C at the voice's own pitch and other notes moving the whole contour.
- Split. Each note takes the next syllable, the next word or the whole text.
- Language and Variant. Menus over eSpeak NG's 150 languages and 104 voice variants, such as other speakers or the Klatt synthesizer.
- Formant moves the voice's formants up or down in semitones without changing the pitch. Breathiness blends in a whisper of the same words, up to a full whisper. Speed sets how fast the consonants and unheld vowels play, 0% to 400%. Vibrato Depth and Vibrato Rate add a vibrato that fades in after each note.
- Amplitude Envelope. Voice lets each syllable shape its note and keeps the voice open until its last consonant; Envelope 1 shapes the voice with Envelope 1, as the other oscillator types do.
- Transpose, Tune, FM and ring modulation from other oscillators work as on the other types. FM bends the pitch at audio rate while the formants and the syllable's timing stay put.
- While the host plays, the syllables follow the song position: starting playback or moving the playhead anywhere sings the syllable a play from the beginning would, loops included, and hosts that chase held notes are handled. A chord with notes added while a key is down keeps singing one syllable until every key is up. In mono Legato mode a note change keeps its syllable at the new pitch.
- The words are saved in presets; where in the song the notes start is saved with the host's project.
- The plug-in bundles now carry eSpeak NG's data (about 29 MB), so the installers and zips are larger than beta 1's.
- Maim effect. Maim by Arden Butterfield, in the Distortion and character category: the sound goes through a real codec and back, with Maim's circuit bends on the MP3 encoders. Its controls:
- Encoder. Blade and LAME are the MP3 encoders, each with its own tone; Opus is the internet codec; GSM the 13 kilobit telephone codec; LPC a 2.4 kilobit vocoder, with its own LPC Sample Rate from 2 to 22.05 kHz.
- Bitrate for MP3 and Opus, Turbo, Tilt, Error and Mix at the top of the slot.
- For the MP3 encoders, Maim's bends in groups: Spectral (Frequency Shift, Level Shift, Feedback), Butterfly (Straight, Crossed), and MDCT (Band Step, Band Invert and Window Step for LAME; Band Shift and Band Reverse in place of Maim's band reassignment matrix).
- For Opus, GSM and LPC, a Packet loss group: Loss Period, Loss Width, Loss Jitter and Lost Packets (Drop or Stick).
- Drive, Low Cut, High Cut and Makeup in the Gain and filters group.
- Changing the encoder or bitrate crossfades to the new one; the host is told the codec's latency, which follows the encoder. Each codec runs at its own rate behind a resampler, so the effect sounds the same whatever the oversampling.
- Arpeggiator rates can be modulated. Free Rate, Sync Rate and Time Mode are modulation destinations now. Every step the arpeggiator plays is a new note, so they take only sources that run on their own: LFOs, random LFOs, macros, the mod wheel and pitch bend. Assigning another source says why it is refused.
-
Multi-sample loads sample files of any length. DecentSampler instruments that slice one long recording (Claustrophobic Piano's is over 134 million frames) loaded none of their samples. The fixed cap is gone; the memory budget still applies.
-
Community presets in the preset browser. The Collection list has a Community presets row beside All presets and Favourites. It lists the patches shared on atlas.blindproducers.org, the community preset library, with the uploader as the bank and the style as the category, so the Library, Bank, Category and Tags lists and the search narrow them as they do the presets on disk. Return on a row downloads the preset into the Community library (
Community/Presets/<uploader>/<style>in the Atlas folder), checks it against the library's checksum and loads it; from then on it shows among all presets too, and the Downloaded column says which ones are here. The list is fetched in the background when the row is chosen and kept for ten minutes; Refresh preset list fetches it again. A preset not downloaded yet is never autoloaded while scrolling. - Community preset previews. A shared preset whose uploader attached a recording says so in its details, with the recording's length. P on the row, or Play preview in its context menu, fetches the recording into
Community/Previewsin the Atlas folder the first time and plays it through Atlas's output beside whatever is playing; P again stops it, starting another row's preview stops the first, and Atlas says when a preview starts, stops and finishes. - Community banks. The Collection list's fourth row, Community banks, lists the banks shared on the library, with the uploader as the bank and the genre as the category; each row's details say what the bank holds (24 presets, 3 wavetables and 2 samples), how large the download and the unpacked files are, and whether it is imported. Return downloads the bank's archive into
Community/Banks/<uploader>in the Atlas folder, checks it against the library's checksum and unpacks it as Import preset bank does, so its presets then show among all presets under the bank's name; Return on an imported bank unpacks it again. A bank's preview plays with P like a preset's. - Share patches and banks on the community library. The Preset menu has Share patch on the community library and Share bank on the community library. While Atlas is not logged in, either opens a login window first: it says that no API token was found, takes your personal API token in a box that hides what you type from the screen and the screen reader, and has a button that opens the API tokens page of your account on atlas.blindproducers.org in your browser. Log in checks the token with the library and keeps it in the system's password store, never in a file, a preset or the host's project. On macOS that is your login keychain, where each DAW keeps its own: you log in once in each DAW, and the keychain never asks for your password. On Windows it is Credential Manager, on this computer only, and one login serves every DAW. Where the store will not keep it, Atlas holds the token in memory until the DAW closes, and says so. Then the form opens in the editor, like Save patch: for a patch, its name, style, tags and description, filled in from the patch, with the library's styles to choose from (Atmosphere, Bass, Bells, Brass, Chords, Drums, Experiment, Guitar, Keys, Lead, Organ, Pad, Percussion, Piano, Pluck, Sequence, SFX, Strings, Template, Vocal, Woodwind, World and Other); for a bank, the folder of the user library to share (or another folder), its name, genre, tags and description. Share uploads in the background: the focus moves onto a progress bar that reads the percentage sent, said again every couple of seconds while the bar keeps the focus, and Cancel or Escape stops the upload. Atlas then says "Shared ... on atlas.blindproducers.org", or the library's reasons for refusing it, field by field, with the form left open to fix them. A token the library refuses, deleted on the site say, brings the login window back, and the share goes on once a new one is accepted. Settings logs out. Escape or Cancel closes the form and the focus goes back where it was.
- Settings. The Editor menu is gone: its button is now Settings, which opens the Settings window at once. Everything the menu held is in that window, as a group VoiceOver enters (VO Shift Down) and NVDA names as the focus moves in, while Tab moves through every control in turn. Plugin info shows the version, with the beta (Atlas 2.0.0 beta 2, VST3 plug-in), and has buttons that open GitHub to report an issue, read the source code and see the releases. Undo and redo are buttons named after what they would do, for hosts that keep Command Z for themselves. Tuning says which tuning is loaded, loads a tuning file and clears it. MIDI learn mappings lists every mapping with a button that removes it, and Remove all. Accessibility holds the speech settings the old window had. Online community browser turns the community library on or off in the preset browser and the Preset menu (on by default; off, Atlas makes no network requests for it and the audio thread does no extra work), says which account the saved API token belongs to, how much it has shared and where the token is kept, logs in with a token and out again, and opens atlas.blindproducers.org. Keyboard help holds every shortcut in a text box read line by line. The window scrolls when it is taller than the screen, and Escape closes it from anywhere in it, the text boxes too.
Fixed
- The editor is called Atlas. Screen readers read "Keyboard and VoiceOver accessible editor for Atlas" after the editor's name; they now read Atlas alone.
- Rename macro and the Move to Trash question. A macro's context menu showed a garbled character after Rename macro, and on macOS the question before moving a preset to the Trash showed garbled quotes around the preset's name. Both read plainly now.
- Export folder as bank over an existing bank. Exporting onto a bank file that was already there added the new archive to the end of the old file, which then would not import. The archive is now written beside it and replaces it once complete.
- Mod wheel and pitch bend on global parameters. A route from a wheel to a parameter outside the voices, such as an effect's mix or the volume, moved only while a note played and stayed where the last voice left it. It now follows the wheel whether or not a note is playing.
- VoiceOver stays on the control after prompts, dialogs and rebuilds. Typing a value, adding modulation, loading a wavetable or an instrument, or showing the wavetable editor could leave VoiceOver at the top of the window. The screen reader now returns to the control it was on, or its replacement when the rows were rebuilt, and announcements made meanwhile wait for that move instead of being cut off. Escape closes the value prompt.
- EQ, Mid Side EQ and Compressor rows are grouped by band. Each EQ band has its own group (Low band, Band 1 to 4, High band; Mid Side EQ puts them in a Mid and a Side group). The compressor keeps Enabled, Enabled Bands, Attack, Release and Mix at the top of the slot, with Low, Mid and High band groups below, each saying when its band runs.
- Windows build. This is the first beta whose Windows build includes the Speech oscillator; linking eSpeak NG no longer puts its compatibility headers ahead of the system headers.
Building from source
git submodule update --init now also fetches third_party/espeak-ng, which the build compiles together with its language data, and third_party/opus for the Maim effect. Maim's circuit-bent LAME and BladeEnc and libgsm are kept in the repository. eSpeak NG is GPL v3 or later, Opus BSD-3, LAME and BladeEnc LGPL, libgsm its own permissive licence; see NOTICE and third_party/README.atlas.md.
This is a beta release. Atlas is still being developed and tested: expect rough edges, keep copies of the presets you care about, and tell us what works and what does not.
